Bible view: Tattoo / body piercing

Old Testament law gave this mandate to Israel: “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:28). Although Christians today are no longer subject to the constraints of the Old Testament law and the New Testament does not mention this issue (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:24-25; Ephesians 2:15), the subject is worthy of our attention because the law had specifically prohibited tattoos.

About tattoos and body piercings, a good conscience test is to see if we deserve to ask God’s blessing and through this behavior fulfill his good purpose. “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (I Corinthians 10:31). The Bible does not explicitly oppose tattoos or body piercing, but also does not give any reason for us to believe that God would have us get a tattoo or piercing.

Another factor to consider is modesty. The Bible teaches us to dress modestly (1 Timothy 2:9).  Dressing modestly means covering certain parts of the body deemed inappropriate to reveal. Modesty means not attempting to attract the attention of others; a modest person does not cause someone else’s special attention.  Tattoos and body piercings are very noticeable. From this point of view, it is not modest to have tattoos and body piercings.

Even when the Bible does not explicitly deal with the problem mentioned, an important principle is to evaluate your ability to do it to please God.  If that cannot be accomplished, it is best to refrain from such behavior. “But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.” (Romans 14:23).  Remember that our bodies and souls belong to God. Although I Corinthians 6:19-20 does not directly mention tattoos and piercings, it gives us a principle: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. “(I Corinthians 6:19, 20). No matter where we are, what we do, we should follow this truth. If our bodies belong to God, we have to make sure to clearly have His permission before getting tattoos and piercings.
